Sad news reaches us of the death of our former player and chairman Bob Read.
Bob was a major part of the club as a player and during his two stints as chairman during the 1980s and 1990s.
Fondly remembered by many at the club where his son Chris was also such a key member.
Swardeston chair Stuart Bartram said: “Many will remember Bob well for his leadership in a critical stage of our development. A headteacher by trade Bob was a brilliant teammate and a magnificent contributor to the club’s success. Our condolences are with Chris and the family.”
Trustee and former 1zt XI captain David Thomas said: “Where do you start? A genuinely lovely man who did so much for Swardeston Cricket Club. He loved cricket and everything it stood for both on and off the field. Sadly those characters are getting fewer. My greatest sympathy to Chris and all the family.”
Former Swardeston secretary Phil Kerridge said: “Really sad news. Such a wise head at the helm of the club during his time as Chair. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be on the Committee with him.”
Former player Stuart Shearing said: “Sad news indeed âŚ.âMr Chairmanâ. A great teammate, and when elected as Chairman always offered wise counsel & advice. Above all though, a thoroughly nice chap.”
Current Swardeston 1st XI scorer Norm Bygrave said: “Extremely sad news, first served on the committee under Bob, great guy, my deepest condolences to Chris and the family.”
Bob’s name will be forever associated with Swardeston as he donated a trophy in his name. The Bob Read Shield is awarded to the Swardeston CEYMS player of the year with the current holder being Alex Bilham.
A former headmaster at Watton Junior & Heartsease Middle Bob’s funeral will be held at St Faith’s Crematorium on Friday 2 June at 1.30pm.
