Swardeston duo Bud Bailey and Rob Newton produced sparkling performances for the Northamptonshire academy side on Saturday 8 September.
Having helped Swardeston to win their first EAPL title the previous weekend, Newton was called up to make a rare appearance for the academy side in the Northants Cricket League Premier Division against Rushden, alongside Bailey, who has been a regular member of the side this year.
And Newton, 17, responded in magnificent fashion, hitting 165 from just 90 balls, including 14 sixes and 14 fours. His first 50 came off a relatively sedate 49 balls, but he then launched a blitz of 110 runs in 41 balls, regularly hitting the ball out of Rushden’s Stocks Lane ground. His spectacular effort allowed the academy side to declare on 334 for three from 47 overs. Not to be outdone, pace bowler Bailey then undermined the Rushden reply as he took four for 33 from 12 overs, helping to dismiss them for 174.
Both youngsters will be heading abroad this winter to further their cricketing education, in trips organised by Northamptonshire County Cricket Club.
Newton is going to the world spin academy in India to hone his batting skills, while Bailey, also 17, is travelling to South Africa for coaching.
