The inaugural Vauxhall Mallards floodlit T20 competition was held on Tuesday 21st August 2007 after a rain postponement the previous evening. The under 13’s were drawn to play Topcroft in the semi-final match reduced to 10 overs a side due to the weather.
Having been put into bat the club’s youngsters posted 96 for 2 with captain David Micklethwaite reaching an unbeaten 66 in the process. He was ably supported by the middle order batsmen who appear to have learnt the art of quick running between the wickets. Topcroft rarely threatened the total with some superb bowling from Matthew Taylor returning figures of 2-0-6-3 together with an excellent fielding display.
Vauxhall Mallards awaited in the final and they also reached 96 in their 15 overs batting first with the floodlights now taking full effect as darkness decended. Casper Tutt taking the only wicket to fall with a fast yorker to dismiss the Mallards skipper.
Swardeston Sharks response was both measured and well timed as they reached the target of 97 from the final ball of the penultimate over. David Micklethwaite again starring with an unbeaten 47 including a six to win the match. Once again he received able support throughout making the win seem easier than it actually was in truth.
The win finishes a fine season for the under 13’s who also reached the regional finals back in July. There are some fine young prospects within their ranks and an excellent team spirit.
