In a thrilling finish, Swardestons Under 13′s progressed to the Regional Finals by virture of losing fewer wickets in todays tense regional play-off game at Wanstead.
Batting first , Swardeston made the worst possible start losing Toby Fletcher to the 2nd ball of the innings. Captain David Micklethwaite and Robbie Bridgstock then set about repairing the damage and set the tone for the rest of the innings with some fine stroke play . Both departed in quick succession ,unperturbed Henry Parkinson and Harry Anderson-Brown took the game to Wanstead and with brilliant running wrestled the initiative back.
Parkinson retired on 30(competition rules) , a superb innings , while Anderson-Brown perished run out for a swashbuckling 25 as Swardeston pushed on in an attempt to put the game out of reach.
In Wansteads innings Henry Parkinson soon proved a major irritant as he removed the first four batsmen . Wanstead responded , and although losing wickets at crucial times kept within striking distance of the required 120 winning total. Sam Bloom was introduced to the attack and aided by a sharp stumping from Robbie Bridgstock removed the dangerous Singh (28) . Jack Watts then produced a stunning one handed catch diving backwards bringing the large crowd to it’s feet and Swardeston thought they were home and dry .
However Wanstead set up a tense final over requiring 12 from it and whittling it down to 3 of the last ball. Swardeston held their nerve and with only 2 runs coming from it Swardeston emerged victorious by virture of losing fewer wickets.
Swardeston now progress to the Regional Final on Tuesday at Bishops Stortford (10am)
