The under 13’s won the county final of the National ‘Spirit of Cricket’ competition with an 8 run victory over Vauxhall Mallards in an excellent fixture which had been cancelled on three occasions due to rain.

The hosts lost the toss and were put into bat. They achieved a par score of 84 for 9 with Toby Fletcher holding the inning’s together with a retired 32 not out (competition rules) having opened. Several Swardeston players sacrifised their wickets in pursuit of runs during the final stages.

The reply from Mallards was measured with Oliver Stone top scoring on 23. The match turned with the introduction of George Catchpole into the attack with his spin bowling accounting for five Vauxhall batsmen.

Despite a flurry of runs in the penultimate over, the game was won with six balls remaining when Swardeston took the final wicket from the fifth catch of the inning’s.

Swardeston now travel to Wanstead and Snaresbrook on Sunday 15th July in a Regional play off game.

The winners then participate in the Eastern Regional Final at Bishops Stortford on Tuesday 17th July.

Well done lads, an excellent performance.
