Swardeston’s Robert Newton produced a blistering innings to help England Under-17s beat the European Cricket Academy in a double-header.
Sixteen-year-old Newton, from Taverham, a member of the Northamptonshire Academy, scored 83 from 45 balls as England won by seven wickets in the first of two 50-over matches at the National Cricket Centre in Loughborough.
He shared an opening stand of of 120 with Daniel Housego, of Middlesex, and his innings included five sixes and 10 fours – with 28 scored in one over.
In the second game Newton, who toured South Africa with England Under-16s last winter alongside clubmate Bud Bailey, made only eight as England recorded another comfortable win.
Newton also captained Midland Under-17s against the North, scoring 56 in the first game which the North won and 58 not out in the second as the Midlands gained revenge.
Bailey has been sidelined recently with shin splints.
