Swardeston Cricket Club are delighted to announce the name of its two professional signings for the 2016 season.

Joining Mark Thomas’s Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League champions will be former Sussex and Hampshire batsman Joe Gatting and padding up for the 2nd XI will be South African all-rounder Daniel Poulton.

Joe, aged 28, was released by Hampshire last September after three years with the county. He topped Hampshire’s first-class averages last summer, although only playing four games.

His Hampshire duty followed five seasons with Sussex.

Joe grew up in Brighton and is the son of former Brighton & Hove Albion defender Steve Gatting and nephew of former England captain Mike Gatting.

For the last three out of five winters Joe has played for Northern Districts Cricket Club in Adelaide, South Australia.

Like his father, Joe was on the books at Brighton & H FC for five seasons, two years as an apprentice and three seasons as a professional making 44 appearances, but when offered a chance to join Sussex’s 1st XI in 2008 he quit football for cricket.

Twenty-three-year-old Daniel is an all-rounder from the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg, playing in the Gauteng Premier League.

Through sheer weight of runs, Daniel forced his way in to the club’s 1st XI. A right-hand middle order batsman, he also bowls seamers clocking in around the 70mph mark. In addition to his performance for Wanderers, Daniel was named batsman-of-the-year in Johannesburg’s top Last Man Stands league and is ranked in the top 100 players in the world in the competition.

1st XI captain Mark Thomas said: “We are excited to welcome both Joe and Daniel to the club and look forward to them helping drive the club forwards in 2016.”

Joe said: “I am really looking forward to joining Swardeston. Cant wait to get started and help push the club to plenty of silverware for the 2016 season and beyond.”

Daniel said: “I am delighted to be joining Swardeston CC for the upcoming season. It has always been a dream of mine to play cricket in the UK and now I am realising this thanks to Swardeston CC and Robbie Humphries. I look forward to meeting all the lads and contributing my all to the team and in return having a successful season for the club.”

Swardeston’s thanks go to Rob Humphries at World Sports Xchange for helping secure both players.
