An intriguing contest at Barton Turf was cut short on Saturday as Ashmanhaugh and Barton Wanderers’ meeting with Swardeston ended in abandonment after the visitors had made a brisk start to their reply.
After winning the toss and choosing to field in this Anglian Vehicle Linings East Anglian Premier League match, Swardeston made regular inroads in to home team’s batting.
But they were made to work hard by Kieran Spencer, whose determined 72 from 121 balls formed the centrepiece of the home side’s 245 all out in 48.3 overs.
Spencer struck eight boundaries and held the innings together as wickets fell around him.
Jay Parmar injected early impetus with 23 from 18 deliveries, while Zak Tribe, Louie Stronach, Joe Everett and Rejwanul Islam all made useful contributions to keep the scoreboard moving.
For Swardeston, Saranga Rajaguru took 3-26 from his 10 overs while Adam Todd, Richard Sims and Matthew Taylor claimed two wickets apiece and Lewis Reeder one wicket.
Swardeston then came out positively in pursuit of 246, reaching 38 without loss in only 3.2 overs before the weather intervened.
Peter Lambert led the early charge with an unbeaten 20 from seven balls, including four fours, while Benjamin Chapman was 12 not out at the other end before rain abandoned the game.
Swardeston gained 12 points and Wanderers 11.
With two games to go, it is still very tight at the top of the table.
