Swardeston’s 1st XI collected maximum points on the opening day of the season as centurion Jaden Hatwell helped them to a 61-run win against Burwell in the EAPL.
Joel Abraham (35) and Richard Sims (38) laid the platform for Hatwell, who smashed four sixes and 22 fours in his innings of 141. George Walker (30) and Ian Tufts (33no) helped swell Swardeston’s total as they declared on 309 for six.
Peter Richer (71) and Frans Johannes Bester (51) both fired half-centuries for Burwell, but ultimately a superbly timed declaration allowed Swardeston’s slow bowling contingent time to bowl Burwell out, as Hatwell started the ball rolling with three wickets. Norfolk skipper George Walker then completed the job as he swept up the tail to finish with figures of four for 47, with Burwell all out for 248 in the 66th over.
Meanwhile, the 4th XI were well on the way to a comfortable 9 wicket win of their own, hosting Brooke A on the Common.
Swardeston ripped through the Brooke A batting line up with wickets being shared between all of the bowlers, and really Brooke’s score of 159 all out was never going to be enough.
An opening stand of 113 between Jonny Martin (84 not out) and Jon Olpin (50) got Swardeston most of the way there, only to allow Will Kennard enough time to hit a quickfire 20 not out of 16 balls to take them to victory in just the 25th over.
The 2nd XI and 3rd XI both get underway next weekend.
