Swardeston are delighted to announce that Lewis Denmark has been appointed captain of our 1st XI.
Lewis has been vice-captain of the team for the past three years but now steps up into the lead role following the decision by Swardeston professional Joe Gatting, who was captain from 2019-2021, not to come to the UK in 2022 from his Adelaide home.
Stuart Bartram, chairman of Swardeston, said: “We are very pleased to confirm Lewis’ appointment so soon after the finish of the 2021 season. The club’s trustees wanted to give Lewis clarity in the role as early as we could as he sets out on his tenure as captain. Lewis has been a much-valued member of our club for nine years and has played an important role in the 1st XI during that time
“The remaining captaincy positions throughout the club are being considered by the trustees as we prepare for our annual meeting in December. We look forward to working with Lewis to progress the next stage of the 1st XI’s future.”
Lewis joined Swardeston in 2012 from his boyhood club Bradenham and has played for the 1st XI since. He has played a major role in Swardeston’s youth coaching setup including continuing to be the lead coach for both the club’s ECB All Stars and Dynamos programmes.
“It is an honour to be named first team captain of this great club and I cannot wait to get started.” Lewis Denmark
In December 2019, Lewis was appointed the Norfolk Cricket Board’s Development Director after joining the NCB on a full-time basis in 2015.
Lewis said: “It is an honour to be named first team captain of this great club and I cannot wait to get started. I have been fortunate to be a part of a very successful period over the past decade and I am well aware that replicating the success of Mark Thomas and Joe Gatting over that time will not be straightforward.
“That said, we continue to have a large squad that is full of talented players and with a few additions over the winter period I see no reason why we cannot compete for major honours across all competitions next summer.”
